Dr. Marvin Slepian, Regents Professor and associate head of BME, was named to the American Association for the Advancement of Science's 2025 class of fellows on March 26. Two other University of Arizona faculty members joined Slepian, bringing the university's total number of AAAS fellows to 30.

The AAAS recognized Slepian, also a member of the James E. Rogers College of Law faculty, for "his distinguished contributions to biological, biomechanical, and device aspects of the field of cardiovascular bioengineering, to medical technology, and to intellectual property leadership."

Slepian holds more than 100 patents and creates devices like heart valves, biodegradable stents and the first FDA-approved total artificial heart. He is also the founder and director of the Arizona Center for Accelerated Biomedical Innovation, which focuses on bringing biomedical inventions to market.

"You need science, medicine, and engineering to innovate," Slepian said, "but you also need law to operate."
